Building Maintenance
If you join this department, you will have lots of opportunities to learn all aspects of light building work. You will learn brickwork and basework as well as do all kinds of repairs and maintenance across our extensive estate. If you progress well, you may get the chance to acquire licences for digger, dumper and forklift. Your training here will set you up for an apprenticeship or employment in the construction industry.












Our Building Maintenance Department can help you to...
- Get your licence to work on sites (CSCS Card)
- Get Working at Heights, Manual Handling & Emergency First Aid qualifications
- Learn basework, bricklaying and brickwork repair
- Do block paving and concreting
- Gain a range of light building experience
- Digger, Dumper or Forklift licences may be possible
- No prior experience is necessary as full training is given
Our Programme
Our Level 1 course lasts 3 months. Level 2 is a further 3-month placement. Please read the ‘Length of Stay’ section on our Referrals page for more information.
Level 1 is about learning the basics of the trade and gaining work experience.
Level 2 is about Increasing your work experience and skill level.
By the end of Level 2, trainees will usually have had the opportunity to take tests and acquire:
- CSCS
- Driving Theory
- Emergency First Aid
- Manual handling
- Working at Heights
- Health & Safety
- Abrasive Wheels (Grinders)
Examples of department skills you can learn:
- Using a trowel
- Making a mix
- Building a range of different walls and corners
- Guttering
- Gulleys
- Brickwork repair
- Drains
- Experience on a range of power tools
- Basework – basic setting out of walls
- Block paving
- Rendering practice
- Plastering practice
For trainees that prove themselves and for whom it is deemed appropriate, there may be opportunities to extend the placement and achieve a deeper level of work experience and skill.
Trainees might get the opportunity to work toward or achieve some of the following:
- · Driving practical
- · Digger, Dumper or Forklift licences
